Sumit's Journey to Becoming an Actuary

Imagine how unusual it is to meet someone working as an actuary in a country with so many people. There are only 600 actuaries in a population of 1.4 billion in India. Sumit Ramani, who was born in the 1980s in a small town called Bhilai in Madhya Pradesh, did something remarkable. His father, who was a well-respected doctor, initially wanted Sumit to excel academically in their hometown. And when they moved to Bhilai, a place known for producing future IIT students, Sumit started leaning towards engineering and eventually became an actuary.

The Rigorous Path to Actuarial Excellence

Becoming an actuary is a demanding journey, requiring the successful completion of fifteen tough tests and a strong foundation in mathematics, problem-solving, and strategic thinking. Sumit Ramani took on this formidable challenge, steadily passing one exam every six months while working in the IT division at Kotak Life. However, his transition to the actuarial division faced significant hurdles as he faced rejections for three long years. Despite these setbacks, Sumit's unwavering determination ultimately paid off when he was given the opportunity to evaluate each life insurance product in the Indian market between 2011 and 2012.

    The Pivot to Financial Innovation

Despite his success in the actuarial sciences, Sumit Ramani felt a strong desire for more meaningful work. He noticed that existing insurance products often didn't fully meet the needs of policyholders, prompting him to reassess his career.

In a bold move, Sumit transitioned to a risk management role at Swiss Re. This shift presented new challenges and opportunities. Working at Swiss Re exposed him to a global perspective, collaborating with stakeholders worldwide. His role also allowed him to work from iconic locations like The Gherkin in London, adding a touch of glamour to his career.

Sumit's move to risk management expanded his horizons and paved the way for his journey into financial innovation, where he sought to address the shortcomings he had observed in the insurance industry.

    The Leap of Faith

In 2017, Sumit took a big step. He decided to leave his secure corporate job and chase his dream of making a tool to help people plan their finances better. This tool is called ProtectMeWell, and it's designed to assist everyone with their financial needs. Sumit's decision was driven by a strong desire to do good and always follow his moral compass. With ProtectMeWell, he set out to create an API-first financial planning tool, making financial planning more accessible for everyone.

ProtectMeWell: Bridging the Gap in Financial Planning

Sumit's brainchild, ProtectMeWell, goes beyond conventional financial planning tools. Designed as an API-first engine, it offers unbiased guidance on life and health insurance, retirement planning, and building emergency funds. With over 50,000 users benefiting organically from its features, ProtectMeWell is breaking new ground in financial planning by maintaining user anonymity and promoting transparent calculations.
